BaleineCash

Personal accounting · everything stays on your computer

Know where you stand, without handing your accounts to anyone.

BaleineCash takes in your bank movements and follows your rents, your securities and your assets — held outright or jointly, country by country.

You sign in at your bank and download your transactions. BaleineCash opens the file — txt, csv or Excel — recognises the entries and posts them.

Windows + Chrome. No data leaves your disk.

Who it is for

This is not software for accountants. It is software for people who want to keep track of their finances, or to learn how.

Student

Learning to follow your spending and keep a budget, comparing what was planned with what was actually spent.

Landlord

Rents, charges, insurance, works: the result of one flat or of all of them, from quote to payment.

Expatriate

Accounts in several countries, separated for each tax return and brought together for the overall view.

In co-ownership

Often after an inheritance: see the whole value of the property and your share, pro rata to your ownership percentage.

Investor

A global report on the portfolio — composition, gain, charts — and not just share by share.

Business owner

Keeping at home, offline, a view of the accounts your accountant keeps, by importing the company's data.

Half recognise yourself? The long version, with the story behind each case →

How it works

Three steps, as often as you like — at least once a month is what we suggest.

A transaction file exported from the bank.

01

You download from your bank's website

From your bank's online area you export your transactions as CSV or Excel. BaleineCash knows none of your credentials and never connects to your bank.

The import screen, with a preview of the proposed entries.

02

You import the file

The program walks you through defining the format once, then shows you a preview of the entries before you confirm.

Transactions filed by account, then a balance sheet.

03

BaleineCash proposes a classification, you confirm or correct

Automatic recognition proposes a classification based on keywords, amounts and other criteria that you set as your imports go along. Each import is quicker than the last.

What makes us different

Local, really

Your data lives in .db databases on your disk. There is no central server: nobody but you has access.

No bank connection

Never hand your credentials to anyone. You export, you import. A choice of independence, not a technical limitation.

Co-ownership, pro rata

One ownership percentage per account. Your statements come out at 100 % or pro rata to your share. One estate, several percentages: the picture stays exact.

One net worth, several countries

Separate by country and by activity to prepare each tax return, consolidate for the overall view. One database per currency if you need it, and that consolidates too.

Securities tracked by ISIN

Shares, funds, bonds, ETFs, cryptocurrencies: the make-up of the portfolio and the gain, and not only line by line — by region, by industry, by type.

Your data stays available

When a licence expires, only the keying in of new entries is blocked. You can consult, export and print everything. Your data stays your data: you can reach it and work it further however you like.

Your data does not travel

Where is my data? On your computer, in ordinary .db files. Nowhere else.

  • No banking credentials stored — the program never asks for any.
  • No online account, no cloud, no central server.
  • A dated backup every time you close the program properly. The databases are yours: copy them, open them, export them.

The program in pictures

Real screens, taken from the program. The figures come from a demonstration set of accounts.

Portfolio analysis: each holding compared with its purchase cost, grouped by sector, with each position's weight and the gap in euros and percent.
Where the portfolio stands
Chart showing a security's movement between two dates, in value and in percentage change.
The history of a holding
Balance-sheet group management screen: three levels of grouping across assets, liabilities and profit and loss.
Your chart of accounts, your way
Depreciation schedule for a fixed asset: duration, annual charge, net book value.
Depreciation that keeps itself

Frequently asked questions

What does it run on?

Windows, with the Chrome browser — the only one we have tested. There is no Mac or Linux version.

Does it connect to my bank?

No, and that is deliberate.

BaleineCash never connects to your bank and knows none of your credentials. You download the file of your transactions yourself, then you import it. It is a choice of privacy and independence.

Do I need to be an accountant to use it?

No.

To track your bank transactions, no accounting knowledge is needed: a chart of accounts is supplied, VAT is hidden, accounts are found by name and amounts are allocated automatically.

To follow a business, knowing what a debit and a credit are does help. And if you want to go further — depreciation, quotes, consolidation — the structure is there, ready when you are.

That is how we started ourselves. Nobody is born an accountant, and very few feel called to it. Let us remember that the first writings of humankind were accounting records. Surely not out of love, but out of necessity. And that was before tax codes were invented.

Where is my data? In the cloud?

On your computer only, in local files. Nothing is stored at the publisher's.

Does the program fill in or file my tax return?

No. It helps you prepare it — statements, tables, exports — but there is no filing with the authorities.

You do choose your level of detail, though: net salary, or gross salary less contributions and tax as shown on your payslip. Enough to check what your employer or the tax office have calculated.

What happens when my licence expires? Do I lose my data?

No, you lose nothing.

On expiry, only the keying in of new entries is blocked. You go on consulting your whole set of accounts, exporting them and printing them. Your data stays on your disk.
